For his age and gender, Dex is on the small side. He's still growing, but he's undersized and likely will stay that way; naturally, he's slim, but his Quidditch training has earned him some muscle. He has come to expect teasing for his size, and also for his dress; his style contributes to his 'nerd' stereotype. He likes button-up shirts, polos, sweaters, khakis, etc.; a way that is classy but does not help his 'image' much. Exposure to the sun lightens his hair drastically; it goes from rather dark in the winter to naturally highlighted in the summer, or when he's outside for Quidditch a lot. His hair is pretty long but still manages to stick up most of the time, or lay flat. Dex doesn't tend to smile all that much, but he has very white straight teeth from years of braces. Overall, there is nothing extraordinary about his appearance to put him above average, at best.

If you asked someone who knew him, they'd probably say that Dex is "quiet and smart" with little elaboration. While they are correct, there is a lot more to him than that. It is very clear why he was sorted into Ravenclaw; his natural intelligence is astonishing on its own, but when you combine that with his determination and work ethic, his ability is mindblowing. He's quite well-rounded, as he was raised from birth to learn and study and push himself in every aspect of his life. He doesn't mind it, though; he loves to learn new things, and basically anything he doesn't know will capture his attention and fascinate him. He's known to have his head in books and can often be found among the shelves of the library.
Dex is quite meticulous and thorough, sometimes to the point of being an over-achiever. He's the guy that writes an essay twice as long as he was required to because he can and because he likes to. He pays great attention to detail. Perfectionism drives him, which acts as both a strength and a flaw; while his determination is admirable, he settles for nothing less than the best, and nothing is ever good enough for him. He has quite the competitive nature in him, which is not a well-known trait; despite a calm and collected exterior, he can get quite feisty when tested, and he will strike you down with knowledge and with ability such as on the Quidditch Pitch. However, he isn't 'tested' often; for the most part, he is reserved and a pushover. Mostly, that attitude emerges on the Pitch; he's fierce and competitive, and he also has astonishingly good reflexes considering how clumsy he is on his feet.
He is extremely knowledgeable about the sport, and about all sports; he knows every stat, player, rule, you name it. Yes, somehow Dex has managed to turn sports into something nerdy - only he could do that.
There's not a lot that Dex struggles with, but with people, he does. He is painfully shy, not because of an inflated arrogance or because of a lack of desire to socialize, but just because he is timid by nature. He will not start a conversation, he will find it difficult to carry on a conversation, and frankly, he doesn't know what friendship is supposed to be like. He's gotten used to being picked on, and is a very easy target: foreign. small. nerdy. clumsy. pushover (unless, as said above, you ignite his competitive drive), and he won't stand up for himself - the list goes on. When he's not painfully nervous - which is almost always - he is very well-spoken. In conversation, he is quite kind, classy, and fair. Dex is an extremely loyal and honest guy, and he tends to be quite respectful, never a bad word about anyone. He strives to be like his father, in both occupation and personality, and is almost his spitting image apart from the introvertedness. He loves his family more than anything, although it is frustrating to him that his father is so well-known and he must live in his shadow.

Dexter Maximilian Cox Sr. is what you might call the "Renaissance Man" of the magical world. A halfblood former Gryffindor, he found immediate success after graduating; he specializes in spell invention, but has also dabbled in Potioneering, Writing, Healing, etc. His work brings him all over the world doing research and giving presentations, but despite this busy schedule he has had time to find a wife, Annalise, a half-blood witch from North America, and have three kids. The oldest, Beatrix Roxanne, the middle, Dexter Maximilian Jr, and the youngest, Alexis Maxine, are a very close threesome, very protective over one another. Dex was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, but he never really had much of a home anywhere due to the family's constant mobility. He has a very strong bond with his family, which is one of the wealthiest and most prominent for a non-pureblooded family, but outside of them, Dex has a hard time building relationships because he never has time to establish and develop them.
Despite these social struggles, Dex showed much promise to be a great wizard like his father. He began showing signs of magic when he was quite young, as did his sisters. Although they moved frequently, his father insisted that the kids establish an education, so they received the equivalent of a Muggle education, but were constantly on the move so they had to learn it all themselves. He also insisted that they attend school at Hogwarts rather than an American or other European school because he believed it to be the best education. And so it was; he received his Hogwarts letter unsurprisingly after his eleventh birthday - which is in July, making him one of the youngest in his year - and was sent off to Hogwarts with no real experience on maintaining friendships. He was sorted into Ravenclaw due to his natural intelligence, fervor for learning, and work ethic.
Dex instantly struggled with fitting in and making friends. He was an easy target for bullies; susceptible to insults, physically small, socially awkward, stereotypically nerdy, not willing to stand up for himself. Some people had heard of his dad, whose name was thrown around quite a lot, and then found him to be equally as brilliant but not nearly as charismatic and personable. He was always excited to go home for the holidays because of his closeness with his family, but he never returned to the same place each time. Also due to his family ties, he was invited into the Slug Club, whose gatherings he attends sometimes but the sheer amount of people scares him off most of the time.
He soared to the top of his class very quickly and stayed there, passed his exams every year with flying colors. Although he is gifted in just about every area, he seems to have adopted his dad's knack for spells, and he excels in charms. He plans to drop Herbology after his fifth year because - well, mostly because he's allergic to about everything in there, and he's clumsy, a combination which does not amount to taking good care of plants. Still, though, his marks are incredible, and he's probably more popular amongst the teachers than the students, who mostly like to target his nerdiness and his awkwardness and - well, everything. And his size. But for his fourth year, he plans on using his size to his advantage; he has the build for a good Seeker, and he's resolved to try out for the house team, despite a bone-chilling fear of doing so.
