Kirin sat on a bench near the fountain in the clock tower courtyard, simply sitting there was all that he was doing. He was apparently lost in thought, over all that had happened in the past days that he had been around the school. Evanthe was definitely mad at him now, but he was still very lost as to why she was mad; he just knew that she was clearly angry. Maybe that was what he was doing, sitting there on the bench, trying to figure out what he had done wrong. It was just not coming to his mind, however, and he was starting to get frustrated over to the point he could no longer think straight. Instead, he stood to his feet and looked around for something else that he could do, rather than concentrating on Evanthe. Yet, it seemed that no one was around in the courtyard quite yet and if there was, there were very few out there.

Letting out a sigh that sounded like he was more pissed off at someone or something than just being frustrated, Kirin began to walk around. He left the bench near the fountain and wandered toward one of the archways that lead to the open yard beyond that. Possibly, he might head out to the tree that Evanthe and he used to hang out by, the one tree nearest the Forbidden Forest. But then he thought otherwise, seeing as other students might get curious as to what he was doing so far out. So, he found a tree nearer the school and sat down underneath it, plucking up a few strands of grass to ruin. There was nothing better to do anyway, he had not seen his sister or his friend around in a few days, which worried him. In fact, he had heard not a single word of them either, nothing about either of them getting into trouble lately.

The sixteen-year-old shook his head, trying to erase the thoughts of Evanthe and Pestilence out of his mind for the time being. There was no reason for him to be worrying over the duo, they could just be off doing other things on their own. Sure, he relied on the two of them a lot, but maybe this was a test to show that he could rely on himself more. Well, whatever it was, he was alone either way and it was not a feeling that he was quite used to or liked all that much. Kirin frowned at that thought, rolling his eyes at his own childish behavior and continuing threading the grass. "Idiot, you can be so childish at times, get a hold of yourself, you're a man for goodness's sake," he muttered to himself. "You shouldn't need to rely on others so much as you do not, man up and rely on yourself more, Kirin Jaeger."

It was nice out, and there was very little homework, so Bethany had decided to take a stroll. Well, “very little” basically meant she could put it off until after dinner, and since most of it was a History of Magic essay, she planned to not try very hard anyway. She couldn’t help wondering if there was anyone out there who actually cared about the class. There wasn’t anything Binns taught them that she couldn’t learn from a book, and if she was interested enough in something, she would certainly read about it. The only problem was that he tended to make the parts of history that would have had her on the edge of her seat sound like the finance report her dad had once tried to explain to her. It was magical history, too. That, of all things, should have made it interesting, but whenever she thought about it, she heard a droning in the back of her head and saw a page of notes that gradually turned into doodles and poems that she hid with her hand.

So she had left everything in her common room and raced out into the sun. It was a beautiful September day, and she wanted to get as much sun into her body as she could before October came. She was determined to see the summer out sunburnt – especially since neither of her parents were around to but her about sunscreen – and hopefully her freckles would last through Halloween. She might even get a few good freckles this time; like her hair turning red, it was rather hit or miss. Maybe she’d get lucky on both counts and finish the month with bright red hair and a face covered in freckles. She didn’t know why she liked both of those. Her sister was always the pretty one, and her hair stayed brown and her skin tanned lightly if it did anything at all.

Her thoughts were everywhere, so it took nearly fifteen minutes of wandering around the courtyard and practicing charms on errant twigs for her to notice the boy sitting beneath a tree. She knew she had seen him around; it would be difficult to forget his face, and Bethany remembered passing him in the hall and wondering who he was and how he managed to be so… well, pretty was the best word she could think of. He was a Slytherin, she was sure, and by all rights she ought to keep moving. Any of her friends would have told her to just move off, since he looked a fair bit older than her, but she paused and watched him for a moment. He looked disturbed by something, and she thought she saw him muttering and tearing up blades of grass. Perhaps even an older Slytherin could use a knight in shining armor, so she headed to the tree and dropped to the ground beside him.

“I hope I’m not interrupting,” she said, “but you look like you could use someone to rant at. Or I could jinx your enemies for you. My name’s Bethany, by the way, and I don’t think I ever learned yours.” She stuck out her hand to shake and offered her friendliest smile.

Tossing the last blade of grass away, he flopped his head back against the trunk of a tree and closed his eyes to think. However, the thought did not last long, for the moment he closed his eyes, the shadow of another being crossed over them. Great, now it appeared that someone wanted to bother him when he really just wanted to be left alone right at the moment. Cracking open a blue-grey eye, he peered at the younger-looking girl with small and subtle curiosity toward her. She was definitely younger than him, maybe by a year or two, he could not really tell, but he had never seen her around before. In fact, if at all, this was his first time getting a good look at her and if he had seen her around before, he could not remember when. Kirin closed his eyes again for a second, then opened them fully to watch Bethany staring at him like he was staring at her.

"Only the wind," the Slytherin male responded to her, sitting up straight so that he could get a better view of her. "I'm just sitting here relax and thinking over where some of my friends could have gone off to, more like my sister and our best friend. But that doesn't matter anymore, if you would like, you can sit here too, though, I doubt much talking will happen." First off, he looked rather tired, evidence that he was a guy who stayed up most of the night to study unnecessarily. So, he was a little uppity in talking and maybe a slight bit rude, but that seemed to be about it for him. Then he realized he had forgotten to introduce himself to her, seeing as she was kind of enough to say her name to him. It felt odd, though, as he was usually the one giving his name first rather than someone else; however, he would not let that bother him.

"Kirin Jaeger," Kirin said, giving a small nod to the right as an invitation for her to sit beside him. "I have nothing to rant about, just merely questioning somethings and some people as to where they could be. Anyway, I feel I've seen you around before, although that is hard for me to say since I'm always swallowed up in something. I don't believe we have any classes together, so that either puts you as a year older than me or a few years younger than me." He gave a shrug then, as if he did not really want to try and figure out and if she wanted to say it, she could. The difference in school years never really got to him, except for maybe the first year, so tended to be a bit annoying. After all, it was their first year, but did they have to be excited about being at Hogwarts year round; that was annoying.

"But, I can tell from your clothes that you're Gryffindor," he stated shortly after he had spoken. To be honest, he hated Gryffindor students, his father before him did and so did his mother in the past. Likewise, he was always trying to please his father as well, so he would not be beaten when he returned home, this was one of the things. However, here he was, sitting beneath a tree and talking to a Gryffindor who was muggleborn, of course, he did not know that part. As far as he knew, she could have been a pureblood Gryffindor, but he would still have hated her either way. So, the question now, was wondering why he was talking to her when he knew that he hated that house with a passion. Sure, it may not have been truly his passion to hate any house at all, but whatever his father wanted, he would get.

Well, he was evidently feeling a bit snippy. Of course, now that she looked closer, he looked rather pale and tired, so she supposed that excused it. After all, she wouldn’t expect anyone to act like a cheerful little angel when they needed a few more hours of sleep. “Thanks for not minding my presence,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Guess I should have realized a Slytherin would have liked to be alone to brood.” If he was going to be snippy at her – tired or not – she wouldn’t feel under any pressure to be particularly nice to him.

“Nice to meet you,” she said, reminding herself to be at least a little civil on her first meeting with someone. “People tend to vanish, I’ve noticed. It’s annoying.” Of course he wouldn’t have noticed her; he seemed like the type who might not notice much of anything. But that was her being mean again, so she said, “I’ve seen you walking around the halls, I think. And I’m just a fourth-year, so no classes together.” He’d be a sixth year, then, and for a moment she was reminded of the Muggle teenagers she’d seen around her hometown, the ones who tried to act like they just didn’t care about anything.

And there was the house discussion. He was probably a very proud Slytherin, but then, she didn’t know that she’d met any who would have preferred to be in some other house. “You’ve got stunning powers of observation,” she said. “I wonder what you’ll do next. Maybe challenge me to a duel, or whatever it is our houses do when two people are alone together?” She’d feel a bit strange about dueling him. Though he looked fit enough, he was probably tired, and she wouldn’t want to fight anyone who wasn’t up for it unless they really deserved it. “You’re being pretty civil so far, though. Good job, I guess.”
