Barty looks a fair blend between his mother and his father, which creates a very average physical exterior. At fifteen, he is average height, and may just grow a bit more but he promises to be neither extraordinarily tall nor extraordinarily short. He is neither made of muscle nor entirely skin-and-bones. He's a very fair-skinned fellow, pale year-round and easily susceptible to burns from exposure to the sun. Some would describe his hair as a light brown, but even that description seems to be generous in terms of colored. More accurately, it is a tan, or straw-colored. He typically keeps it fairly short so it can sit unstyled on his head, or else slightly spiked up in the middle, but he has been known to let it grow quite long in the front when he is too lazy to cut it.
Like his hair, Barty's eyes are near colorless, a steel gray with perhaps a tint of blue in the right light. As expected, his choice of clothing is very plain. He is in school robes or casual robes nearly all the time, with little care for Muggle-style clothing. If necessary, though, he sticks with plain jeans, a plain t-shirt, and perhaps a sweater or jacket on top. Very little of his appearance stands out or catches the eye; his skin though fair has no marks nor blemishes, but there is a spot reserved on his left forearm for the Dark Mark, when he leaves school, or sooner.

If he wasn't hellbent on being a Death Eater, Barty could have a distinguished acting career. As a kid it was his passion; he loves doing voices and impressions, very gifted at pretending to be someone else. Much of the time he uses this talent to get a laugh out of his friends, but occasionally it comes into play for other things, such as tricking the teachers into adoring him. Most people have no idea who Barty Crouch is, because life to him is a game of pretend. Most people in acting tend to be very theatrical, very over-the-top and enthusiastic, but that's not the case with him. He is nearly always collected and levelheaded, almost under-enthusiastic. Though he's quiet, he's not shy; he's simply a listener rather than a talker. He puts a great deal of thought into everything he's going to say, so it's worded and delivered exactly how he wants. In fact, he rather likes to be social, and is typically polite but vague in conversation, but he has a pretty good sense of humor and can be the life of the party if he really wants - basically, he can be whatever he wants to be, or pretend to be.
Barty is a multi-talented individual. He's successful in just about every single thing he does, in and outside of class. As a child, he was a prodigy, and to be honest, he could have a distinguished career in pretty much anything. Learning is a huge priority for him, building up his skill set to support his natural talent and become a very, very strong wizard. For that reason, he usually has very impressive grades, but he only really bothers with topics that interest him. Most of them do, some do not. He takes special interest in the Dark Arts, Occlumency, etc., but he does acknowledge the importance things like Charms, Potions, and Transfiguration can have on his future. He doesn't simply care about which spells cause the most pain or the most destruction; he likes extravagant, intricate plans and plots, ones that test his limits on what he can accomplish and what he can get away with. He loves challenge, it motivates him and brings out the best of his ability.
Barty has absolutely no interest in emotion. He's very apathetic, but he can pretend otherwise. In reality, he's pretty diabolical and twisted, even sadistic, but he maintains a very calm exterior. As mentioned above, he's a listener, an observer, above all. He's cunning and manipulative and scheming, and very good at finding and exploiting people's weaknesses. He thinks it is good sport; he's no blatant and obvious bully. In fact, it's very difficult to catch him in the act. He's the type of guy to say something demeaning, walk away, and leave someone wondering whether they were just insulted or not. When he finds something he likes, he tends to obsess over it - like acting, like learning, like the Dark Lord, like Quidditch. But he is loyal, unwaveringly so. His mind is a little - a lot - unstable, but of course he thinks he's perfectly normal.

History

Bartemius Crouch Senior had no interest in children, but he ended up with one, and made sure it stopped at one. His priorities included work and his wife, and left no room for a third priority, which should have been his only son Bartemius Jr. Mabel, on the other hand, doted on the boy, but she was never the healthiest of women and could not always keep up with the energy of a young child. They had and still have a very strong relationship, but Barty always strived for the approval of his dad. He was something of a child prodigy. He excelled at everything he did, obviously very magically gifted, but none of his natural talents earned him any attention. So he expanded them; he read and he learned, at this point, still younger than Hogwarts age so his abilities were limited, but still notably extraordinary. He showed off his knowledge whenever he could, but still failed to get any sign of pride from Barty Crouch Sr.
As a kid, Barty wanted to be an actor. He loved live performances; he had a vivid imagination and active creativity, and like most things, he was very good at it. His mom supported him in one hundred percent, but his dad said he needed a more respectable, promising career choice. So he abandoned that dream. Sometimes he spent time at the Ministry with dad, where he heard a lot about dark wizard cases and dark magic. Neither of his parents believed in blood supremacy or anything of the like, but his dad preached a lot of propriety, of the duty of a pureblood to set a prime example for the muggleborns. To take advantage of the opportunity and privilege of a magical background.
Somehow this got twisted around in his head. He saw things in muggles and muggleborns that were unusual to him, and thus wrong, and thus, inferior. As smart and talented as he is, his mind worked in a different way than everyone else, which was sometimes a good thing and sometimes not so much. But he was good at pretending, and he hid any mental instability under the guise of a charming, brilliant young man, who without any surprise received his Hogwarts letter at age eleven. Although he was particularly smart, the house placed him in Slytherin like his dad.
The teachers loved his diligence and his intelligence, his politeness and his charm. It seemed he could do no wrong, so that when other students now and then began to complain that Barty treated them poorly for being muggleborns, no one believed them. He got on with most of Slytherin house, who were generally more vocal and obvious with their harassment of muggleborns, while Barty tended to fly under the radar. Being a stereotypical arrogant bully was not his priority; he still had hope that now, in school, he could earn the love of his father. He studied everything, things much more advanced than his age and things not in the Hogwarts curriculum. Due to the affection from Hogwarts professors, he was easily able to get into the Restricted Section.
Barty never liked to attract attention to himself. He's led a pretty normal Hogwarts lifestyle. Even with his grades - once he realized that his dad would have no interest in him, no matter what he did - they slipped a little. Still, school was a top priority. As a third year, he worked tirelessly with his schedule to fit in as many electives as possible, but the school would not allow it. So he studied outside of class. He also joined the Quidditch team that year, as a Chaser. He was never overly social, but he had some friends, he went to a few parties. As the war gets more serious, he is entirely and completely devoted to becoming a Death Eater. If he couldn't please his father, he would have to fight against him. But he keeps that side of himself very quiet.
Going into his fifth year, he was named a prefect (which was unceremoniously ignored by his father, as expected), and he plans to take 12 O.W.L.s, even for the classes that he didn't take. He has no idea whether the school would allow this or not, but that's the plan as of now. At home his mom is getting sicker, which is always a concern on the back of his mind, and his dad is busier than ever. Neither have much time or ability to pay attention to their hugely successful but increasingly unstable son.
