Deal with the Devil (Evanthe)

If the staff had any foolish hope in their hearts that the Marauders - namely, Sirius Black - would go easy on the pranks and rule-breaking for their final year, then Sirius quashed that hope instantaneously. He had missed the opening Sorting ceremony and feast in order to sabotage the Slytherins' food and to delay its arrival, which had surprisingly gone without punishment. It was a red flag to the staff that he and James were missing during the incident, and even if there was any doubt, they could simply ask the house-elves in the kitchen who had been there tampering. And yet, no detention had been issued for the 'harmless prank.' Perhaps they didn't want he and James in the same detention room. Perhaps they thought it would look bad if they sent their new Head Boy to detention the very first night of school. Or perhaps they were just feeling generous and didn't see it as a punishable act.

Naturally, that only meant to Sirius that he had to try harder, and it hadn't taken long. The same weekend of their return, someone had thrown a bonfire on the grounds, and of course Sirius thought he'd contribute by providing some tinder. He'd snuck into the History of Magic classroom and taken all the books he could carry from the shelves and promptly threw them into the fire. He may have been two years removed from taking that horrid class, but that did not mean he was two years removed from terrorizing Professor Binns. Five years of that class (well, assuming he attended all the lessons, which he didn't) deserved more than five years of practical jokes, in his eyes. In Binns' eyes, apparently, burning a pile of the class's textbooks was more than just a 'practical joke' like the stunt at the opening feast had been.

Thus, Sirius landed himself in the all-too familiar detention chamber within a few days of arriving at school for his seventh year, confirming that his hell-raising antics would not yield just because he was supposed to be mature and responsible. It was the first and surely not the last time he'd see this place this year, although he had developed a habit of skipping detention, which got him into deeper trouble. But there was plenty of time left for that, so he had no choice but to comply and show up at detention. He dropped into one of the chairs in the detention chamber, kicked the chair onto its back legs so that he could comfortably cross his feet on the desk in front of him and his hands behind his head. He'd brought stuff to work on, but he really wasn't feeling it. Maybe someone else would show up and entertain him... or maybe nobody else had rushed into the rule-breaking like he had.

You can't trust a cold-blooded woman

The skys were fairly cloudy and the the wind was blowing strong today. Pestilence and Kirin were off doing twin stuff... whatever twins do, thus, leaving Evanthe to her own devices. After a bit of roaming the castle she began to grow awfully bored, but after her recent plummet from the skies, flying didn't seem like an option. Not yet. Instead, a walk in the infamous Forbidden Forest seemed like a wonderful idea. She never understood what was so scary about it, or why it was off limits to the students, the place seemed quite nice to her. However, she did have the capability to fly from any trouble she might find herself in. Other students didn't have that luxury. Maybe they feared getting lost? Or being unable to fend against a wild hippogriff or something. It was almost amusing to her. Even Pestilence, her fearless best friend chickened out when it came to the forest. Making her way down the staircases and through the halls of Hogwarts, she watched the walls and the students she passed. Evanthe had no one to talk to, nothing to really think about, so why not find things to note? She spotted a few Ravenclaws studying, looking away with a scowl on her face. Some Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors were chatting in the hall, though she passed without a second glance. Evanthe passed the spot where she noticed the paint chipping from the corner of the wall. With a quick glance she saw it had only gotten worse. This place really was ancient.... Ah, she was at the entrance. With a quick glance at who might be watching, she exited and headed for the forest. As Evanthe walked, she noted the warmth of her skin. It was a bit hotter than she had first suspected, well, this walk would be a quick one then. The wind blew her hair back, and it floated behind her as she headed towards the Forbidden Forest. Evanthe stopped as soon as she came to the entrance. She didn’t bother to look over her shoulder, no teachers usually walked around here. Evanthe closed her multicolored eyes, listening to the sounds around her. She could hear the birds chirping, bugs humming, the occasional rustle of grass from some small creature. It was all so peaceful. Well, it was, then she heard an authoritative shout. “What do you think you’re doing!” As Evanthe stepped into the forest, she froze and turned around. A teacher had caught her in the act. He rushed up to her with a disapproving look. “Don’t you know the forest is off limits to students? To detention with you.” So yea, that’s how it happened. She got in detention for stepping into a ‘scary’ forest. Evanthe walked into the room silently, her eyes scanning over everything. She noticed A gryffindor sitting in one of the chairs, he seemed awfully relaxed. Judging by his appearance she supposed it was safe to assume that was none other than Sirius Black. he had brought some work with him, something Evanthe hadn’t even thought about. Even if she did, she wouldn’t do it. Perhaps she could carve something into the desk, or even talk to the other in the room. Eh. Evanthe sat down in a chair near the other side of the room, resting her arms on the desk. Oh how she hated Detention.

Over the years detention had become less of a triumph and more of a hassle. In his earlier years it was a symbol that his trouble-making ways were a success, and it really wasn't much of a punishment when his friends were right there with him. In fact, it was even more opportunity to cause a ruckus. Unfortunately the staff caught on, and then it actually was somewhat a punishment, or at least, a hindrance to his day. Sirius could think of so many better things to do with his time than sit in the detention chamber all night. So at some point he stopped showing up at all, at least to some of them. He'd push his limits, until he was sure it was absolutely necessary to show up or else... something. What could they do? Expel him for something so minimal as skipping detention? Write to his parents? Hardly. They had nothing to threaten him with, in reality; he wondered why they even bothered trying. It was pretty clear by now he was not going to learn his lesson.

As the minutes passed slowly, Sirius was beginning more and more to believe it was going to be a solitary night. That was disappointing, because if he could pass the time by being social, it went pretty quickly. He brought work so that it would pass somewhat quickly, but that was more of a Plan B. Unlike most people, being back at school actually meant for him a break from work - partially. He still had to do it, it was just that there were more distractions and more flexibility and it was easier to procrastinate. So really, this stint in detention could be a blessing in disguise. If he could use his time wisely. He looked at the books and parchment on his desk, beside his feet, reluctantly, trying to build up some kind of motivation to actually do something, when the door opened. He could not deny, he was surprised, because he'd all but conceded that it was far too early in the year for anyone but him to land himself in detention.

He'd forgotten, of course, about Evanthe Ryker, whom he saw quite frequently in the detention chamber, with whom he had not been separated just yet because the staff had not let on yet that he actually did not detest her presence. Maybe it was the house rivalry, maybe it was his history of fighting with Slytherins, who knows? She wasn't the ideal company, but he would have been relieved to see anyone walk in that door, at this point. "You again?" he remarked, watching her take her seat before turning his head back toward the front of the room. "How'd you manage to piss them off already?"

As soon as Sirius spoke, Evanthe’s mind was working on a reply. She didn’t take long with finding what to say, at least, not when she was going to talk sh*t. She does so often, and its not like she’s ever had a reason not to. Evanthe usually gets a rise out of people, either a positive or a negative Evanthe doesn’t care. ”Oh I was simply taking a stroll in the beautiful garden around the side of the castle when the gardener caught me. Apparently I was stomping on his flowers.” She put on a little frown and shrugged her shoulders, though the frown turned into a smirk and she simply chuckled. ”No, no, I did want to take a stroll, but not in a garden. I was heading for the Forbidden forest when one of the teachers caught me. Don’t ask me which, I have no idea.” After that spiel, Evanthe rested her head on the desk. She thought long and hard about what she could do while passing her time in detention If it were possible to crack one of the windows open, which she doubted, perhaps she could escape for a bit then come back. Of course she would only fly low to the ground until she felt comfortable with raising the altitude, that usually took a day or two depending on the fall. However, Evanthe has been trying to push it and break out of her comfort zone. Fear is holding her back and she just can’t live like that forever. Evanthe glanced at Sirius, realizing she hadn’t asked him what he had done. Might as well, right? Her only other options for passing the time would be sleeping or working up a conversation. Unless Sirius isn’t a rivalry holder, sleep would have to do. Though he might draw on her face or something... Trust in others was something she lacked. Evanthe’s options were becoming quite limited. ”So, what did you do?” Conversation it is.

Due to Evanthe's silent entrance, Sirius wasn't sure what kind of response to expect when he initiated conversation. No matter what it was, it was better than nothing. He'd always hated silence, and he'd rather have it filled with even unpleasant conversation than remain silent. But it was not an unpleasant answer he received from Evanthe; in fact, he'd say it was too pleasant. He didn't know her well outside of their mutual stints in detention, but she did not seem like the frolicking through the beautiful flowers type. He merely raised an eyebrow at the first story until she corrected it with a much more believable story. The forest made more sense; they were so uptight about students walking even in the general direction of the forest. Excessively uptight. "There's a punishable offense, if I ever heard one," he said sarcastically, taking a shot at those who so strictly enforced the no-forest rules. He found them absurd, so he just ignored them. Apparently, so did Evanthe, but luck was not on her side this time around.

When silence once again overtook the dismal room, Sirius assumed she was not in the mood for conversation, which was a shame, but he would probably just end up starting it up again anyway. He really did not want to resort to actually accomplishing things, even though he would have to eventually. For now the new year felt too fresh to actually be working. Though, at the starts of each new year, he always gave a half-hearted attempt to stay on top of his schoolwork, which lasted all of a week, at most. It was work - actual work - that he'd brought with him this time, and he knew he could not slack as much on this as he could with homework. Still, he'd push his limits; he'd rather force conversation, anyway, whether Evanthe liked it or not. As it turns out, he would not have to force conversation, as her voice rang out from the other side of the room again, this time inquiring why he was here.

Sirius tried to remember the exact words that Professor Binns had used. It was difficult, considering Sirius had just tuned him out during the rant, just like he had in class. Come to think of it, this was probably the most animated he'd ever seen Binns get, but that wasn't saying much. "'Blatant and intentional destruction of school property'" he quoted, perhaps not word for word but it got the point across. Then he explained in more detail, in his own words. "You were there, I think. I burned a few textbooks. Nobody reads them anyway." At least, not for that class. For his last few years in History of Magic he didn't even bother buying the textbook that was required. He knew he wouldn't touch it all year, so why waste the time and money? Even the most serious of students had trouble cracking open textbooks for that class. And he was pretty sure he had seen her at the bonfire; there had been a fair amount of faces - and a fair amount of alcohol consumed, on his part - but he seemed to remember seeing her briefly.

Tread Carefully

Evanthe smirked at his sarcastic response, chewing on the bottom of her lip boredly. It really did seem like an outrageous rule, and Evanthe waited for the day she could take a night detention in the depths. It would be wonderful to walk, or simply fly, through the dark trees and plants. She wondered what ‘terrifying’ monsters she would find. Ever since the first day she walked in there, Evanthe felt at home. In fact, she stayed in as long as she could, only to terrify the first years waiting for her by jumping out. A little demon she was when she was young. ”That’s what you were burning?” Evanthe chuckled, blinking her multicolored eyes. She glanced up at the clock, frowning slightly. It seemed like it was so far from when they would be free to leave, she just had to deal with it. The blonde glanced at Sirius, cocking an eyebrow. She began to think of how long a conversation with hm would last, or if she was simply wasting her time. She would try to speak, if only she knew what to talk about... Sitting up from resting her head on the desk, Evanthe yawned in her hand before attempting to lean back on her chair. As soon as her back touched the wood, however, Evanthe flinched and drew in a quick breath. She had forgotten about the bruises lining her back from the fall, and it sure felt like a bitch to so much as apply the slightest bit of pressure to them. Hopefully, though, Sirius wasn’t one to question.

As the time ticked on - slowly, mind - it appeared that the two of them were the only ones to land themselves in detention tonight. At least, in the detention chamber. Years of experience taught Sirius that this was not the only way of administering punishment. Some teachers sent the guilty students to their own offices for some punishment to work on, some sent them to obscure parts of the castle for some odd reasons, or even the grounds, such as the Forbidden Forest that Evanthe had been chastised for going near. Which made absolutely no sense, but it is what it is. Perhaps no teacher had yet thought of anything specific for offenders to do for detention, and had just sent Sirius and Evanthe here due to lack of anything better. In reality, though, boredom was the worst punishment for Sirius; but sending another student into the room alleviated a lot of that boredom.

"That's what I was burning," Sirius repeated with a nod. Well, it was one of the many things he was burning. To put it simply, he liked destruction, and an enormous fire with no supervision allowed for a lot of destruction. So a lot of things were being thrown into the fire that night. It was probably the most books Sirius had in his possession in ages, until of course they were aflame. It was kind of worth it, to be honest; detention didn't really affect him, and it had sort of become his home away from home. He spent as much time here as Gryffindor Tower, at least. Despite that six years of experience, it didn't make tonight any less dull. Evanthe wasn't the most talkative person, but she was far far better than nothing. It had gotten quiet again, though, for a moment, and he even heard a yawn from her corner of the room. So she was as bored as he was. Then a stranger sound, a gasp or some sharp intake of air.

"You alright there, sweetheart?" he asked. He hadn't been looking at her at the time, but ahead at the dull gray wall, so he had no idea what caused it. Curiosity and boredom caused Sirius to ask. Anything to spark conversation. In fact, he hardly spared her a look the whole time she'd been here with him. That should change. He swung his feet down from the tabletop they'd been resting on and adjusted to a more typical sitting-position, but sideways on his chair so that he was facing Evanthe and so that he could lean his head and arms on the back of the chair.

//casually switches back to reg. template Evanthe nodded her head, leaning back forward. ”I took a tumble a few days ago... My back hurts like a bitch.” She did her best to ignore Sirius’s use of the term ‘Sweetheart’, though it was semi-obvious she had heard and did not like it. ‘Sweetheart’ was the last thing on the list of things to call Evanthe. Though she had enough control to not lash out about something as small as it. It would probably lose her a possible friend, not that she cares, but a few allies outside of Slytherin would be nice. Sometimes the twins got out of hand and she just couldn’t deal with them. Or they were off elsewhere where she was not welcome. It really was a shame to have only two close friends, though Evanthe tried to get used to it. She glanced at Sirius, chewing on the bottom of her lip. What kind of guy was he outside of detention? Obviously not a goodie two shoes. There was quite a lot she didn’t know about him, though she’s seen him too many times not to try and talk to him a bit more. Evanthe was bound to run into him again, at least, for this last year. He was a Seventh year student.... yea, she could remember that. If he wasn’t she would have seen him a lot more, not just in the detention chamber. So, what about Sirius could she hold to use? Or perhaps he was just a waste of her time. Basically, would he stay friendly? Or does he have a rotten side hidden under all that hair? Evanthe stood up from the desk, rolling her shoulders in attempt to loosen the tension in her back. Being sore was not fun, especially when you were stuck sleeping on your stomach until the pain went away. She trudged over to the window, looking outside for a long moment. She took in all the details, every little thing... Any living creatures? Perhaps students or teachers? What was the weather? She noted all of it. Then Evanthe look to the window itself. Was their anyway to open it? Was it sealed or locked? So far, she saw no way of cracking this thing open without actually cracking it. Bummer.

So the sharp intake of breath had been one of pain. That was a fair explanation, he supposed, but it was nothing to catch his immediate interest nor maintain the conversation. But this was what happened you didn't really know the person with whom you wanted to speak; the conversation stalled. Sure, they had shared this detention chamber on more than one prior occasion, sometimes with other people, usually further into the year, when there was more going on. The summer apart certainly did little to help his cause. There could be no ranting about classes nor discussing recent schooling events, and complaining about being stuck in detention could only last so long. It would definitely help if he knew a bit more about Evanthe than that she was a sixth-year Slytherin with pretty consistent disregard for the rules. And as a Slytherin, probably a half or pureblood; he had a pretty solid knowledge of the pureblooded families of Britain, or at least the ones his parents thought were worth half a thought, and the name Ryker sounded only vaguely familiar.

That was all, though. Sirius only knew the bare minimum about the blonde girl with whom he was spending the rest of this dreaded evening before they were free to go. Earlier, before he'd had company, he'd thought it would be an unwelcome but ideal opportunity to actually get some work done, but now it seemed a better opportunity to talk to someone he really didn't talk to very often. He watched her as she stood from her chair and rolled the shoulders to, presumably, rid them of their aforementioned soreness, and headed toward the window. The sole window in the room that acted as a tease of freedom for the wrongdoers of Hogwarts. He wondered if she didn't want to talk to him, she seemed eager to talk when she did, there just wasn't much to say. At least, he liked to think that, because if not, she was just going to have to deal with him talking anyway. 

Sirius followed suit of Evanthe, stood up and followed her to the window, leaning against the wall beside the window. He followed her gaze out the window where the sky was growing darker by the minute, but for now it was still possible to see, but he looked to her when he spoke. "You seem restless," he noted in response to her constant readjusting in her chair, and now getting up altogether and gazing out the window. Usually it was his job to be the one that couldn't sit still. "Figuring out how you're going to get your stroll in the forest without getting caught this time?"
