Start of Something New James sat just inside the open entrance doors, staring out over the grounds. They'd arrived back at school only yesterday, and this was their first full day back. It was currently about 7am, but James was generally a morning person, so it was no surprise to see him up. Only, he'd slept pretty badly that night and been tossing and turning for hours. Why, he had no idea. But either way, he didn't feel particularly well rested or refreshed at all, even after a rather lengthy shower.  He didn't expect to see anyone around for a while longer yet. Well, there were a few people already up and moving around, but the main crowds weren't up yet. James pulled out a cigarette and lit it up, wondering once again why he even bothered with the things. He didn't smoke enough to be addicted to them, but it was habit he still turned to when he was bored and stuff. Rather than caring, he took a long drag and continued to just stare out of the doors and across the ground. The morning felt fresh and the sun was already up, but James just couldn't quite feel the happy-vibe about it yet. What was it about this morning that had him so dazed and reminiscent? Lily moved quietly through the corridors of the school.  She had gotten up early.  Head Girl duties and all that.  And her roommate snored.  She did not miss that while she was away over the summer.  But the castle was quiet, undisturbed as she patrolled the halls.

Her summer had been strained.  Petunia had been a joy as usual when she came home.  Her and her new boyfriend.  It was not the most pleasant of meetings.  She had already told the man she was a "freak".  She hated that word more than she usually did.  And she had seen Severus walking up and down the street, doing whatever it was he did during the summer.  She avoid him as much as she could.

Walking to the entrance hall, she noticed a back to her.  A back with untidy black hair.  She knew that back.  She made a face as she noticed the sight of smoke and the smell of cigarettes.  She really didn't like the smell of that.  Plus it was against the rules.

"You know smoking in the castle is against the rules," she told the back that belonged to James Potter.  "You should know better as Head Boy Potter."

Start of Something New It had actually been strange to be back in a room with three other people there, rather than being in a room completely his own at night. James thought that every year when he first got back to school. It sometimes took him a while to adjust to just how full and loud the whole communal living thing could be, not just the dorm, but the common room as well. He'd grown up an only child and lived with his parents in a far-too-big house, with lots of space and quiet rooms. His room wasn't even on the same floor as his parents. And even now that Sirius lived with them, he had his own bedroom across the corridor. Peace and quiet. And then Hogwarts. But that wasn't what was bothering him. He still couldn't quite place where that feeling of unease was coming from. Whatever it was it had him silenced, staring out over the fresh, dew-ridden grounds of the school, a stretch of land that had been long undisturbed by the footfalls of students. It made him was to get up and run, and just take in the morning. He hadn't dressed for it though - not even the right kind of shoes.  Every once in a while he could hear footsteps from somewhere behind him but he didn't turn to them - didn't care to see who else was up on this strange, yet wonderful morning. That is, until a voice broke his silent reverie. "Evans." He cast a glance her way, taking in the sight of her. He had, of course, already spend his share of time staring at her in the last... less than 24 hours. He'd spotted her at the station before the train pulled away. He'd seen her in the prefects carriage where all the prefects gathered at the start of the journey, and where McGonagall made a surprise appearance - at least, a surprise to him. He'd watched her over the feast as well, and then there'd been in the common room the previous evening, while she'd been in there, at least. So, he'd seen her, but he found himself staring at her again like he hadn't seen her in years.  Sighing, he turned his gaze away and drew in another drag, staring back out of the doors again and blowing the smoke out in that direction, where the light morning breeze picked it up and carried it away. "It could be worse. I could be smoking in the common room." Besides, he'd made sure to open the doors and sit as close to outside without actually being out as he could. Though, he had shuffled just a little further in when the breeze caught. "And really, it's only my first proper day as Head Boy. I think I can be excused. Granted, she was sure that no first year who was up this early would be exploring the entrance hall when there was a whole castle to explore.  But her point was still a valid one.  She had been a prefect before being Head Girl and was use to setting an example.  Potter had not, his friend had been prefect of their house.  How Potter had gotten to be Head Boy she didn't know.  Then again, she probably wouldn't know.  She had no choice in the decision making and who would just have to life with the choice.

Taking a long breath, she looked up at him with crossed arms.  

"So, are you usually up this early? Or do you stalk other areas of the castle normally?"

Start of Something New That was just being over dramatic, and amused him to no end. The smoke wasn't even going in her direction, yet she was acting like he's blown it straight in her face. Crazy girl. "After all these years I would have thought you'd realized this is my best behavior. I mean, I could have been rigging the Slytherin table with dungbombs, but I'm not, am I?" He threw in a wink with that comment, hopefully just enough to make her wonder whether he actually had rigged the Slytherintable. Add that to the fact he was up really early, and he had a reputation for pranking, it wasn't so far-fetched an idea. Actually, it was a damn shame he hadn't thought to do it earlier... But, there was always tomorrow morning. "If there are any first years awake and out of their common room right now they're probably too busy getting lost in the corridors and starting in awe at the ceilings to care. All first years are infatuated with the architecture." He'd been no different, if he was honest.  James raised an eyebrow in question. Was she actually trying to continue a conversation with him? That was a rare miracle, wasn't it? She usually ran as fast as she could in the other direction from him. "It depends. But I'm generally a morning person. Alright, he could be worse.  And he was right.  Most first years did get lost on their first day...or week.

 "Still, they could get lost and wonder in here," she suggested.  "And then what?  What if they see the smoke rising to the ceiling and then look to see you smoking?  What then?"

It was so hard to make conversation with him.  For years she had avoided him.  She did her best to do so, made sure they sat on the other end of class or the table.  But now, due to them needing to work together this year, she thought conversation without her scolding him would be good, wonderful even!

"Did you go running today?" she asked.  "Its not a bad day for that...I think."  She honestly didn't know.  She wasn't much of a runner herself.

Start of Something New James decided not to comment. He wasn't at all surprised that she pulled the growing up line on him like that. He'd heard it before and frankly he thought it was ridiculous. He had grown up; he'd changed and matured, but that didn't mean that he didn't still know how to have fun She just wasn't going to let up about it, was she? With a sign, James stubbed out the remains of the cigarette and stood up, showing her the unlit remains briefly before shoving it into his pocket. "Better?" She was really over dramatic about the whole thing, as far as he was concerned, but it wasn't like he needed the nicotine fix, it just killed some time and gave him something to do.  James ran a hand through his hair, turning back to face the grounds, leaning one shoulder against the door as he peered out. He shook his head at her next question. "Nah. I should have..." He shrugged his shoulders. "I didn't sleep well." And he was over thinking, of course, but he wasn't about to say that when chances were she'd just make some comment about him thinking.  Words: 194 Tagged: Lily/Open Outfit: link
